Time Flies

Our first week in San Diego has been very busy with many get-togethers with family and friends.  Plus taking care of annual business like establishing a new medical home and consulting a professional tax preparer for the first time.

As a general practice I don't post many pictures of my family in my blog, but here they are!  One good looking group, don't you think?

This was taken a few blocks from their home in Sunset Cliffs when we went for a Sunday morning walk with the dogs.

Food is always a big part of our lives. We enjoyed these Eggs Benedict at the far end of the walk.

It looks like it will be a long time before I will allow myself to indulge in a yummy dish such as this again. The outcome (which I totally expected) of my doctors visit and blood work was the advice to lose weight, stop drinking wine, and get more exercise.

Those of you who followed this blog in 2012 may remember how hard I worked to lose 50 pounds and get healthier. Well, three years later I have to do it again. I did manage to keep the weight off for most of a year, but in the last two I have eaten my way to health problems once again.

I know I can lose weight. I know I can eat in a more mindful way. I have made a new commitment to myself and my own health.

My goal is to lose 50 pounds again by November when I come back to see the same doctor. I can do it! I think I will start by reviewing all the 2012 posts. I know they were very positive.

In keeping with that goal I bought myself a new toy.

A spiffy new 3 speed "beach cruiser" bike. Jeannie Sparks has been an inspiration to me with all of her posts about the things she sees on her rides. I intend to start slowly with daily rides around the parks we visit. When my legs get stronger I will be able to farther afield. I think this is a good "before" picture. Look at those fat thighs and puffy arms!  Eight months from now I WILL BE THINNER!

Good intentions?
Yes.
But this plan of action have been delayed.

Why?

On Sunday I was in a hurry and I fell while going down the Alfa stairs.

I was holding a bag of trash and talking at the same time. I am usually very careful, but not this time, and I fell.

Sprained my ankle.   Ouch!
It is not a really bad sprain, but it will take some time before I can ride.  Right now I'm just looking forward to being able to walk again.

This too will be a memory someday!  But for now it is a bummer.

  1. Ah Merikay - I feel your pain. We did that journey somewhat together, and I too have gained much of the weight back. All good intentions are easily swayed with eating out. I'm hoping to get motivated to get healthy again and you sharing your journey will no doubt help!

Hope your ankle is better soon. Try getting a start with some leg raises - you can do them in bed!

  4. Ouch! Hope that your ankle is feeling better soon. In my experience biking does not put a lot of stress on ankles, so hopefully you will be back on that bike sooner rather than later.

I understand the weight loss challenge, and the keeping it off challenge. I have been working to lose weight since October 2012. I have lost over forty pounds so far. I have had monthlong periods where I get sidetracked and stop losing, but I count it as a victory that I have not gained it back!! You can do it!!!

  8. Of all the weight I've carried it's the "regained" that I hate the most! It's easy to get completely furious at myself after working so hard to get it off, rather than just get back on program. Good for you for making the commitment to yourself :-) My RV step ankle sprain was a "level 5 sprain" that made my foot look like an eggplant - first day of a week's vacation with the BFF :-( Hope you mend quickly!

  11. Sorry you sprained your ankle. I sprained mine about a month ago on a hike, but it is finally getting better. Good luck on the weight loss mission. I too battle those extra pounds. Another joy of getting older.

  12. Sorry to hear of your ankle injury, not fun! My Amazon weight loss has kept off, and my daily walking has helped me maintain it. I still want to lose at least another 20#, but it might be Amazon again that does it.

  15. So sorry about your ankle- that's a bummer! I could stand to lose some weight, in fact, little Katie is also overweight by a pound or two. It's so darn hard to keep our weight down. But honestly I think you look great. I don't think I look too bad, either. The problem is that the extra weight causes other medical issues for us - this time of year I'm always trying to lose a few pounds before my doctor's appointments. Good luck to you - I know you can do it. And I know I can, too - so why am I not doing it? GRRRRR.

PS - great looking family!!! We always have Eggs Benedict, too, when we get together. :)
